  • City & Guilds Level 2 Diploma in Bricklaying
  • City & Guilds Level 3 Diploma in Bricklaying
  • Certificate of Apprenticeship

Course duration/location

The recommended time for completion of this course is four years.
You will attend College at Coutanchez Campus one day a week for off-the-job training.


Course Entry

Apprenticeships are available to all.

You will be assessed for suitability using online tests, with support and guidance provided.

If you have not achieved maths or English at C/4/Level 2, you will study these subjects alongside your apprenticeship. Failure to complete maths and English will prevent progression between apprenticeship levels or achieving your overall apprenticeship.

Entry to the Level 3 qualification will be dependent on successful completion of the Level 2 Diploma.

Course Content

  • Health, safety and welfare in construction: Introduction to health and safety legislation relevant to the construction environment. Working in partnership with the employer, reporting hazards, accidents, and near misses, and adopting safe working procedures.
  • Mathematics and drawing: Introduction to the maths required to calculate quantities and costs of materials. Interpretation and production of technical drawings.
  • Communication and IT within the workplace: Understanding effective communication with colleagues and clients, and use of IT systems to help plan, organise, and supervise the building process.
  • Material knowledge: Understanding the range of building materials used in the construction industry, their properties, and suitability for use, especially in Guernsey.
  • Practical skills: Development of craftsmanship across a range of skills, including:
    • Blockwork
    • Brickwork
    • Plastering
    • Stonemasonry
    • Rendering
    • Drainage
    • Setting out and leveling
    • Restoration and repair

Course Assessment

You will be assessed throughout the apprenticeship through:

  • Multiple choice question-based exams
  • Practical workshop exams
  • Written assignments
