Our trowel trade apprentices have been finding their competitive spirit, taking on some building challenges which have been assessed by our in-house team as well as competition sponsor Annandale.
A huge thanks to Glyn Harris, director of Annandale who helped judge and who presented the apprentices with their prizes. This type of collaboration with local employers is vital in our delivery of training excellence.
Our first year apprentices were asked to build a 1800mm long x 900mm high x 100mm thick wall with an inset basket weave decorative panel. Eight apprentices too part and the winners were:
First - Dan Bogdanovs (prize: £50.00 Annandale voucher and a rose trowel)
Second - Martin Asante (prize: £25 Annandale voucher and a rose trowel)
Third - Dylan Jenkins (prize: spirit level)
The other participants were presented with a goodie bag.
Our second year apprentices were challenged to build a decorative facing brick pier with 225mm projecting wall and contrasting bricks.
The winners:
First - Taylor Rowe (prize: £50.00 Annandale voucher and a rose trowel)
Second - Kaden Carre (prize: £25 Annandale voucher and a rose trowel)
Third - Archie Carre (prize: £25 Annandale voucher and a goodie bag)
The third year apprentices took on building a decorative flower planter containing decorative panels, radius brickwork and contrasting bricks. The winners:
First - Tom Draper (prize: £50.00 Annandale voucher and a rose trowel)
Second - Sol Goddard (prize: £25.00 Annandale voucher and a Marshalltown 16 inch plastering trowel)
Third - Josh Crocker (prize: £25 Annandale voucher)
Our judges were impressed by the high standards of workmanship and skills on display and in many cases there were only tiny differences between the competitors. Well done to everyone who took part.
Two of our third years - Tom and Josh - will be representing Guernsey at the forthcoming Pan-island Skills Competition, which this year will be hosted by University College Isle of Man. Hopefully this will have been good preparation before they take on ‘rivals’ from Jersey and Isle of Man. Good luck Tom and Josh!
