The UAL exhibition - Origins Creatives - is open for submissions from students studying any UAL-accredited course including Art and Design, Fashion Business and Retail, Creative Media, Music Performance and Production, Performing Arts from around the UK, around 60,000 in total. It is an opportunity for students, teachers and families to come together and celebrate student creativity and hard work.
This is the first year that TGI College students’ work has been selected.
The three students are Abby Oppong and Brandon Marsden, who have both recently completed the UAL Level 3 Diploma in Creative & Digital Arts, and Georgia Mazdon who has completed year one of the diploma and will be returning to finish the course in September.
Each student created a piece of work over a 10-week period.
Abby’s quilt ‘Pempamsie’, explores the cultural significance of African textiles as powerful carriers of history, identity and collective memory. Drawing on her Ghanaian heritage, Abby’s uses African wax prints, yarn, recycled polyester and cotton padding to investigate visual communication and symbolism through the form of a quilt.
Brandon’s created a piece called ‘Fractured Balance’ inspired by the symbolism of Yin and Yang and explores the emotional impact of stress, conflict and resilience through contemporary textile and costume design.
Georgia’s installation of fashion outfits uses the themes of extinction and regeneration and explored the delicate balance between environmental destruction and renewal.
Head of Department Creative & Digital Arts at TGI College Richard Marks said: “We are incredibly proud of Abby, Brandon and Georgia. It’s a massive achievement to have been selected from so many submissions from across the country and is a testament to their hard work and dedication. It’s also a reflection of the inspiration they have had from the lecturing team. I am excited to see how their careers progress in the coming years.”
Abby added: “As this project was grounded in exploring my heritage for my own sake, I had a sense of fulfilment throughout every step of the development process regardless of what the outcome would end up being. When I found out my work was chosen for the exhibition in London, I felt honoured that members of the Origins Creatives exhibit team felt what I was trying to say was worth listening to.”
The exhibition runs from 15 to 18 July at the prestigious Mall Galleries in Central London.
