Advocate of vocational training Steph McGovern met some of our apprentices on her recent visit to Guernsey

We were delighted to welcome popular British journalist and broadcaster Steph McGovern to meet some of our Motor Vehicle, Carpentry and Trowel Trades apprentices when she visited the Coutanchez Campus.

Steph was in the island as guest speaker at the Chamber of Commerce annual dinner and, as a champion of vocational skills training, she took the opportunity to take a look around. Having completed an engineering apprenticeship herself, before forging a successful career in journalism, Steph now hosts her own podcast 'Steph on Skills' in which she speaks with industry leaders in the UK to discuss the skills shaping the future of work.

She said:

"Vocational education is an under-represented, underfunded and really important part of our economy. I went to a school that was sponsored by industry, and that made a real difference to how well I’ve done in my life,’ she said.

"It taught me about the world of work from a young age, and made me see that actually I do want to go out into industry and earn money and do well and be ambitious. And I don’t see enough of that across education.

"I think there’s a problem with how we view vocational education compared to the purely academic route, and that is a problem for the economy – so that’s why I bang on about it all the time."

Steph even had time for a few selfies!
