Course Details

Qualifications

There are two qualification options attached to the Engineering apprenticeship:

  • Level 3 Diploma in Engineering - Welding
  • Level 3 Diploma in Engineering - Mechanical Manufacturing
  • Certificate of Apprenticeship

Course duration/location

The recommended time for completion of this course is three years. You will attend College at Coutanchez Campus for one day a week for off-the-job training.


Course Entry

Apprenticeships are available to all.

You will be assessed for suitability using online tests with support and guidance where necessary. Ideally, candidates will have five GCSEs at Grade C/4.

If you have not achieved maths or English at C/4/Level 2, you will study these subjects alongside your apprenticeship. Failure to complete maths and English will prevent progression between apprenticeship levels or achieving your overall apprenticeship.

Course Content

Level 3 Diploma in Engineering

Core units:

  • Engineering health and safety: Requirements essential for safe and effective engineering activities, covering statutory and organisational requirements, accident reporting, and hazard and risk identification.
  • Engineering principles: Use of technical information sources, basic calculations, and engineering science to understand the behaviour and properties of materials, selection of appropriate materials, and application of quality control measures.

Mechanical Manufacturing Engineering course route - Additional units:

  • Principles of mechanical manufacturing engineering
  • Machining materials by turning
  • Machining materials by milling
  • Detailed fitting of materials

Optional top-up qualification or units (course fee may apply):

  • Additional qualification: Welding
  • Additional units: CNC machining of materials, Produce drawings using CAD

Welding course route - Additional units:

  • Principles of welding
  • Manual metal arc welding of materials
  • MIG welding of materials (Metal Inert Gas)
  • TIG welding of materials (Tungsten Inert Gas)

Optional top-up qualification (course fee may apply):

  • Additional qualification: Fabrication & Welding

Course Assessment

You will be assessed throughout the apprenticeship in the following ways:

  • Multiple choice question-based exams
  • Practical observations
  • Written assignments

Course Destination

After successfully completing your Level 3 apprenticeship, you will be prepared for advancement within the engineering industry.
