Programme Introduction

This programme offers the opportunity for students to obtain a degree and a professional qualification in Adult Nursing. This is a 3 year full time programme which is delivered in Guernsey.

  • The cost of your tuition fees will be met by Health and Social Care (HSC), The States of Guernsey and you will also receive an annual bursary of £19,000 for the duration of the programme.
  • You will be part of a small cohort of students, so we will be able to get you know you personally and support your educational needs. You will have the opportunity to work across a wide range of practice areas in Guernsey which will give you a broad experience of nursing.

This is a Middlesex University programme and qualification, designed, assessed and quality assured by Middlesex University but delivered at and by TGI University Centre. Further details of the programme can be found at the Middlesex University website.

You will learn a range of essential nursing skills and techniques to effectively care for adult patients in a variety of healthcare environments. Problem solving and making critical decisions will become second nature, and you will become confident working collaboratively in teams; ensuring you are able to assess, plan, implement and evaluate adult care effectively.

You will develop a detailed understanding of the on-going development of nursing as a profession and be confident in contributing to the debate about its future.

Teaching

The programme is 50% theory and 50% practice. You will have the opportunity to work in a variety of practice placements across the Island in hospital and community settings, as well as in nursing homes.

Theory Sessions

You will be actively involved in a range of learning, teaching and assessment approaches. This course will require your active participation in learning activities and engagement with your fellow students both individually and collaboratively.

Your learning will be supported by technology and this programme will be facilitated using a variety of media and online tools such as online resources, quizzes and learning materials as well as collaborative tools with which you can engage and learn with your peers.

Additional features to this programme

  • Group work will be used throughout the programme to enable students to share their experiences and perceptions, to share good practice and discuss challenges faced within set time frames
  • Skills and Practical Workshops will focus on developing clinical skills and abilities utilising underpinning theory. You will have the opportunity to practice within secure and safe environments such as skills laboratories
  • Individual and Group tutorials will be available to support you
  • Lectures will introduce key information, concepts and theories. This may be followed up with seminars and group work to ensure clarity and understanding of the concepts introduced, and to maximise the integration of theory and practice.

Assessment

All modules are assessed through coursework, which can be a combination of individual and/or group work and presentations. There are also in-class tests and exams.

The learning, teaching and assessment approaches used throughout your programme will encourage you to be actively involved in your learning and to co-operate with other students.


Entry requirements

Details of academic entry requirements including the number of UCAS points required can be found on the Middlesex website select entry requirements.

In addition all candidates must be able to demonstrate literacy and numeracy. This will normally be through the possession of Maths and English GCSE, with a score of 4 (Grade C if awarded prior to 2017). We also accept functional skills or key skills and equivalency tests by Equivalency Testing, A Star Teachers or any other appropriately accredited provider.

Further Requirements

  • You must be in a position to work for the Committee for Health and Social Care, the States of Guernsey for 3 years after you have completed the programme.
  • You are also required to complete a satisfactory enhanced DBS check, Occupational Health check and provide suitable references.
  • You are required to demonstrate that you have experience of working - this does not have to be in the field of healthcare.

Fees & funding

The cost of your tuition fees will be met by Health and Social Care (HSC), the States of Guernsey and you will also receive an annual bursary of £19,000 for the duration of the programme or a reduced bursary of £11,000 per year plus accommodation provided by the States of Guernsey (a limited number of places are available and will be allocated in the first instance to those students who do not hold local residential qualifications).

This bursary is subject to terms and conditions including the requirement to work for the equivalent of full-time for HSC for 3 years upon qualification as a Registered Nurse. The bursary will be paid in monthly instalments and will be paid into a Guernsey or UK bank account of your choice.

Careers

The BSc (Hons) Nursing (Adult) (Pre-registration programme) supports your career.

On successful completion of the programme, students are eligible to enter the professional register for nursing. They will receive career guidance from a professional development tutor and take part in a workshop to discuss jobs opportunities within the various departments within Health and Social Care.

Employment prospects in the nursing field are excellent with 100% of our students finding employment upon completion of the programme. Career progression may involve moving into a management position, consultancy work or developing a specialism in an area of interest.
