Introduction

This module will enable students to critically explore and apply theories of leadership that build resilient, adaptable and high-performing teams. Students will examine how compassionate and ethical leadership supports team wellbeing and effectiveness, and will evaluate their own leadership practice in relation to their role within the organisation.


Module Overview

Students will have the opportunity to explore the following areas:

Foundations of Team Resilience

  • Characteristics and purpose of resilient teams
  • Team dynamics, roles and patterns of contribution
  • Factors affecting resilience in complex organisational environments

Leadership Approaches for Resilient Teams

  • Leadership theories that promote resilience and adaptability
  • Compassionate, ethical and values-based leadership
  • Psychological safety, trust and relational leadership
  • The leader’s role within organisational and interprofessional systems

Inclusive, Emotionally Intelligent and Supportive Team Cultures

  • Emotional intelligence and resilience
  • Equality, diversity, inclusion and belonging within teams
  • Supporting staff wellbeing and recognising early signs of stress or burnout

Communication, Collaboration and Performance

  • Effective communication in high pressure contexts
  • Inerprofessional collaboration and partnership working
  • Approaches for motivating and developing teams
  • Using coaching and feedback to enhance performance

Managing Change, Conflict and Challenge

  • Leading teams through organisational change
  • Conflict resolution and restorative approaches
  • Maintaining resilience during organisation pressures and service demand

Reflective and Evidence Based Leadership Practice

  • Critical reflection on personal leadership of resilience
  • Tools and frameworks to assess and strengthen team resilience
  • Applying evidence based strategies to develop resilient team cultures

There will be up to 10 days of face-to-face teaching during the Semester (September to January or February to June). Specific teaching days will be confirmed before mid-June 2026.


Entry Requirements

Students accessing this programme will normally hold a relevant first degree (2:2 or above). Consideration will be given to applicants who have extensive experience and can demonstrate that they have the equivalent 'graduate level' skills by virtue of this experience. These individuals will be able to seek alternative entry through the accreditation of prior learning process. International students must demonstrate competence in English language through IELTS 6.5 (with minimum 6.0 in all components) or equivalent.
