Introduction

This module will enable students to analyse the concepts of Advanced Practice, including the ‘Four Pillars’ identified within the multi-professional framework for advanced practice: clinical practice, facilitating learning, leadership, and research and development (NHS England 2025). They will apply this to identify how their own area of practice can be advanced. This module is suitable for all health care practitioners who wish to develop their knowledge and skills in a specific aspect of their role, including recognition as an Advanced Practitioner.


Module Overview

This module will include:

  • Definitions of the term advanced practice,
  • Scope of advanced clinical practice roles including education, leadership and research
  • Inter-collaborative practice,
  • Accountability of an advanced practitioner
  • Theory and concepts under-pinning advanced practice
  • Critically evaluating and reviewing the evidence base
  • The legal, ethical and professional dimensions of advanced clinical practice,
  • Governance structures, ensuring safe and quality practice, promoting service improvements
  • Identifying learning needs, planning and delivering teaching sessions, assessing competence.

Entry Requirements

Students accessing this programme will normally hold a relevant first degree (2:2 or above). Consideration will be given to applicants who have extensive experience and can demonstrate that they have the equivalent 'graduate level' skills by virtue of this experience. These individuals will be able to seek alternative entry through the accreditation of prior learning process. International students must demonstrate competence in English language through IELTS 6.5 (with minimum 6.0 in all components) or equivalent.
